Músico, docente, madre, directora de centro… Tu actitud ecuánime, correcta, mesurada, objetiva y dialogante, sientan ejemplo para el alumnado. Pocos saben que dejaste una carrera musical de proyección internacional como violinista para dedicarte a la docencia en la escuela pública. ¿Cómo surge la vocación docente en tu trayectoria?
“En primer lugar agracederte, Elena, el haber pensado en mi persona para mantener una entrevista en relación a la preciosa labor que es la docencia y en segundo lugar, expresarte mi gratitud sincera por las bonitos calificativos que das a mi persona aunque no creo merecer.
En contestación a tu pregunta respecto a la vocación docente, diría que está intrínsecamente ligada a mi niñez y de una serie de vivencias que tuve. En mi infancia, mi juego favorito siempre fue desarrollar el rol de maestra y de divulgadora (jugaba a ser presentadora del tiempo del telediario) con mis hermanos (soy la mediana de tres hermanos). Cuando comencé a muy temprana edad a desarrollar la necesidad de aprender música, me gustaba investigar ese nuevo lenguaje y buscar la manera de poder explicarlo y compartirlo con otros.
Por otra parte, nunca fui demasiado mal estudiante, y por ello, en mi época escolar, mis tutores en repetidas ocasiones me pedían que fuera un apoyo, algo así como una mentora, de otros compañer@s y lo hacía con gusto.
Pero, debo decir que creo que mi vocación se debe sin duda, a mi gran admiración por algunos maestros (de escuela y otros de estudios musicales) que marcaron mi vida por su manera de explicar y en especial por su cariño. Mi maestra de 3 años en Educación Infantil y mi maestra de 1º curso de Primaria, las llevo en mi pensamiento a pesar de la corta edad que tenía y recuerdo como me animaban en cada pequeño logro y como al mismo tiempo eran capaces de hacerme entender el valor del error como una oportunidad; me gustaba tanto ir al colegio que recuerdo llorar amargamente si alguna vez enfermaba.
En la música varios músicos/maestros marcaron mi carrera profesional pero especialmente los de mi última etapa que llevan su labor con letras mayúsculas y de oro; supieron llegar a dar una guía extraordinaria para ayudarme a alcanzar mis metas desde el camino más serio y podría decir estricto pero sabiéndolo combinar magistralmente con lo humano.
Por tanto: la admiración, la empatía, la profesionalidad de otros y otras fue la semilla que germinó en mi corazón en relación a la docencia en el deseo de poder compartir humildemente con otr@s lo que yo tuve la fortuna de conocer”.
¿Y qué virtudes y capacidades crees que te aporta el haber sido músico, en tu actividad como docente y en la gestión del centro?
Yo soy/tengo alma de músico y no concibo mi proceder de un modo distinto al de músico de orquesta, esto es, un equipo con roles bien definidos pero con un objetivo común que se basa en el respeto de cada cual y que trata saber observar con agudeza las virtudes de sus distintos miembros. El trabajo individual, es también, de vital importancia por lo que contribuye al grupo; si alguien falla, todo se desmorona.
Por otra parte, decir que la música es parte indisociable de mí; cualquier tema, explicación va acompañada por alguna composición musical que propongo o conecto con algún músico o compositor sino bien con alguna banda sonora original.
En las clases, yo soy parte del equipo de alumnos, trato de no ser un ente desconectado. Si el grupo no va bien, es un fracaso en primer lugar mío porque no he sabido ser buena divulgadora o no he llegado a los intereses de los demás; por eso, me esfuerzo sobremanera para evitarlo.
En el Equipo Directivo, cada cual tiene su rol definido, pero no avanza correctamente sin las otras piezas del puzzle y lo tengo tan interiorizado que no sé ni quiero trabajar de otra manera puesto que la experiencia de tantos años con músicos ( de todo tipo y especialidades) me aporta este aval. Por ello, necesito siempre conectar con la gente con la que realizo la actividad que sea sino se que está avocada al fracaso y no me gusta errar si ello afecta a terceros.
¿Cuál /es es/son las anécdotas que recuerdas con más cariño de tu trayectoria profesional?
Con respecto a mi actividad docente, tengo un especial recuerdo de mi primer año en Fray Albino el segundo año de funcionaria (estuve sólo un curso escolar); me tocó uno de los grupos más complejos que ha pasado por el centro por el perfil escolar con el que me encontré además de social, sin embargo, los recuerdo con un cariño inmenso. Recuerdo que el día de la despedida, lloré tanto que estuve casi una hora encerrada en el aula porque les adoraba y había sido un año especialmente difícil; hoy en día, algunos y algunas de aquell@s niños se convirtieron en una pequeña parte de mi “familia”. He podido asistir a algunos de sus matrimonios o nacimientos de sus hijos recientemente o a aplaudir sus actuales carreras universitarias y/o profesionales.
En cuanto a la musical…no me daría un día para enumerar los momentos felices. Sin duda, una etapa maravillosa fue la de mi trabajo en la JOSPA (Joven Orquesta del Principado de Asturias), o mi formación en Rusia o seminarios y cursos en Italia. La etapa de música de cámara fue muy productiva y me aportó muchas satisfacciones personales.
Vanesa, eres directora de un centro de Primaria en el centro de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Eres muy querida por alumnos, padres, compañeros y en general toda la comunidad del centro. El colegio se caracteriza por un ambiente inclusivo, libre de violencia, donde se educa en valores y se profundiza en la educación emocional y ciudadana del alumnado, es un centro feliz donde crecen y se forman niños felices. Desde la dirección, ¿qué factores encuentras clave, para mantener el equilibrio, el funcionamiento eficiente y el buen ambiente que se genera en las aulas? ¿qué necesidades observas en el alumnado?
Ojála sea así, que el alumnado y familias y por reflejo l@s docentes se sientan feliz al menos el tiempo que esté en la Dirección.
La clave quizás sea observar, sacar lo mejor de cada cual, respetar tiempos y escuchar y tener claro que de cada situación existen múltiples verdades.
El aspecto democrático es otro pilar de cualquier Equipo Directivo en mi opinión; absolutamente todo lo paso desde el inicio por los distintos órganos de gobierno para llegar a consenso y ser transparente.
Una buena relación con la Inspección y la humildad de preguntar aquello que no se sabe es básico también a mi entender.
Las necesidades del alumnado han cambiado bastante tras y con la pandemia; reflejo de las familias supongo. Acompañar y no juzgar es importante, hacerles parte de la realidad educativa de sus hijos e hijas.
Además de la diversidad, la gestión, la coordinación docente y las horas de docencia, las actividades…..¿qué retos crees que caracterizan el rol de la dirección hoy en día? ¿y cuáles son los más desafiantes después de la pandemia?
Como dije anteriormente acompañar a las familias es necesario. Hay políticas sociales con las que puedo o no estar de acuerdo que afectan a las escuelas; desde luego no estoy a favor de aquellas que directamente afectan al currrículo. El esfuerzo debería ser un valor en alza y las últimas leyes y las venideras en mi opinión pasen muy de puntillas por encima de la misma. Si no hay metas no hay interés.
Yo viví mi modesta educación y me lamento no haber podido más (espero en un futuro tener tiempo y fuerzas) para ampliar mi educación en múltiples campos (poesía, historia, filosofía…) porque no digo nada nuevo, el saber te hace libre; echo en falta este tipo de motivación que debe venir respaldada por la política. A veces es nadar en contra pero debemos luchar por una sociedad mejor, más cívica, más culta.
No hemos vivido en nuestro Centro especialmente capítulos emocionales derivados del COVID 19 pero si es una realidad sobresaliente en otros niveles educativos dónde los niveles de suicidio y depresión se han elevado en nuestra Comunidad Autónoma concretamente, de manera exponencial.
¿Qué mensaje mandarías a padres y madres, docentes y alumnado? ¿Y a los estudiantes universitarios de Magisterio?
No soy quién para dar consejos, nunca me ha gustado darlos. Comparto si me preguntan y si me siento en confianza como ahora mis experiencias y mi modo de vivirlo por si ha alguien le sirve de algo.
Como madre que soy, diría: NO delegar sus funciones como padres y madres en terceros; la educación nace y se cimienta en casa.
A los estudiantes universitarios : tenemos como docentes un papel de altísima responsabilidad y de mucho poder en relación a los ciudadanos futuros, no subestimar dicho privilegio y tenerlo presente a diario.
A la Universidad: que trate de conectarse con la realidad del aula y no con la teoría; no es posible que no se enseñe a programar o a saber como actuar en un futuro como miembros de diferentes órganos colegiados.
¿Qué valores humanos, aptitudes y actitudes crees que necesita un docente hoy en día para afrontar los numerosos retos de la profesión?
No nos debemos dejar corromper por los intereses políticos de turno. El objetivo es la educación en su más amplia manifestación. Aceptar la pluralidad, la inclusión del alumnado es una obligación y debemos continuamente formarnos para ello. Escuchar al alumno/a sin importar su edad ( o la nuestra) es una muestra de respeto e inteligencia.
¿Al final del día con qué te quedas de la realidad diaria como educadora?
Si el aprendizaje ha sido significativo, ha valido la pena; si ha movido algo en su interior, han aprendido y será un aprendizaje no perecedero.
Con qué frase de personaje célebre te identificas? ¿Tu asignatura favorita?.
“ Puedes descubrir más en un persona en una hora de juego que un año de conversación “. ( Platón )…la gamificación bien entendida es maravillosa como recurso y otra frase del gran maestro griego: “ El comportamiento humano deriva de tres fuentes principales:el deseo, la emoción y el conocimiento”.
Por último, ¿qué obra musical nos recomendarías como punto final de tu entrevista y banda sonora de la profesión de maestra/o?
Difícil respuesta…depende del momento supongo: estoy entre las Valkirias de Wagner y la Vida es Bella de Nicola Piovani o Color Esperanza de Diego Torres, jeje…un mensaje positivo siempre.

Musician, teacher, mother, school director … Your fair, correct, measured, objective and dialogue attitude, set an example for the students. Few know that you left a musical career of international projection as a violinist to dedicate yourself to teaching in public school. How did the teaching vocation emerge in your career?
First of all, I would like to thank Elena for having thought of me to hold an interview in relation to the precious work that teaching is, and secondly, to express my sincere gratitude for the beautiful qualifications you give to me, although I do not think I deserve it. In answer to your question regarding the teaching vocation, I would say it is intrinsically linked to my childhood and to a series of experiences that I had. In my childhood, my favorite game was always to develop the role of teacher and disseminator (I played to be the presenter of the news time, hehe) with my brothers (I am the median of three). When I started at a very early age to develop the need to learn music, I liked to investigate this new language and find a way to explain it and share it with others. On the other hand, I was never too bad a student, and therefore, in my school days, my tutors repeatedly asked me for support, (something like a mentor), for other classmates and I did it with pleasure. But, without a doubt, I must say that I believe that my vocation is undoubtedly due to my great admiration for some teachers (of school and others of musical studies) who marked my life for their way of explaining and especially for their affection. My 3-year-old teacher and my 1st grade teacher are still in my memories of the school despite my young age and I remember how they encouraged me in each small achievement and how at the same time they were able to make me understand the value of error as an opportunity ; I liked going to school so much that I remember crying bitterly if I ever got sick, In music, several musicians / teachers marked my professional career but especially those from my last stage who carry their work with capital letters and gold; They knew how to give an extraordinary guide to help me achieve my goals from the most serious path and I could say strict but knowing how to combine it masterfully with the human. Therefore: admiration, empathy, the professionalism of others were the seeds that germinated in my heart in relation to teaching in the desire to be able to humbly share with others what I had the fortune to know.
What virtues and capacities do you think that having been a musician brings you, in your activity as a teacher and in the management of the school?
I am / have the soul of a musician and I do not conceive of my behavior differently from that of an orchestral musician, that is, a team with well-defined roles but with a common goal that is based on respect for each one and that deals with knowing how to observe with sharpness the virtues of its different members. Individual work is undoubtedly also of vital importance for what it contributes to the group; If someone fails, everything falls apart. On the other hand, to say that music is an inseparable part of me; any theme, explanation is accompanied by a musical composition that I propose or connect with a musician or composer but rather with a soundtrack.
In the classes, I am part of the student team, I try not to be a disconnected entity. If the group does not success, it is becayse of a failure of my doing because perhaps I may have not known how to be a good disseminator or I have not reached the interests of others; So I try really hard to avoid it.
In the Management Team, each one has their defined role, but it does not progress correctly without the other pieces of the puzzle and I have it so internalized that I do not know or want to work in any other way since the experience of so many years with musicians (of all kinds and specialties) gives me this endorsement. For this reason, I always need to connect with the people with whom I carry out whatever activity, otherwise I know that without communication and connection this activities are doomed to failure and I don’t like to make mistakes if it affects third parties.
Which anecdotes do you remember most fondly from your professional career? This question is complex because I still feel a duality today;
What is my career path? Apart from my career as a teacher, I have a special memory of my first year at Fray Albino, the second year as a civil servant (I was only one school year); I was touched by one of the most complex groups that has passed through the center due to the school profile that I encountered in addition to being social, however, I remember them with immense affection. I remember that the day I said goodbye, I cried so much that I was shut up in the classroom for almost an hour because I adored them and it had been a particularly difficult year; today, some and some of those children became a small part of my “family” having been able to attend some of their recent marriages or births of their children or to applaud their current university and / or professional careers. As for the musical … I wouldn’t give myself a day to list the happy moments; without a doubt, a wonderful period was that of the JOSPA (Joven Orquesta del principado de Asturias), or my training with the Russians or seminars and courses in Italy. The chamber music stage was very productive and gave me a lot of personal satisfaction.
Vanesa, you are the Head Teacher in a Primary school in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. You are very loved by students, parents, classmates and in general the entire community of the center. The school is characterized by an inclusive environment, free from violence, where students are educated in values and deepened in the emotional and civic education of the students, it is a happy center where happy children grow and are formed. From the management, what factors do you find key to maintaining balance, efficient operation and the good atmosphere that is generated in the classrooms? What needs do you observe in the students?
Hopefully so, that the students and families and by reflex the teachers feel happy at least as long as I am the principal of the school. Perhaps the key is to observe, get the best out of each one, respect times and listen a lot and be clear that there are multiple truths about just one situation.
The democratic aspect is another pillar of any Management Team in my opinion; Absolutely everything happened from the beginning through the different governing bodies to reach consensus and be transparent.
A good relationship with the Inspection and the humility of asking what is not known is also basic in my opinion.
The needs of the students have changed considerably after and with the pandemic; reflection of families I guess. Accompanying and not judging is important, making them part of the educational reality of their sons and daughters.
In addition to diversity, management, teaching coordination and teaching hours, activities … what challenges do you think characterize the role of management today? And what challenges are the most challenging after the pandemic?
As I said before, accompanying the families is necessary. There are social policies that I may or may not agree with that affect schools; I am certainly not in favor of those that directly affect the curriculum. The effort should be a rising value and the latest and upcoming laws in my opinion tip toe over it. If there are no goals, there is no interest. I lived my modest education and I regret not having been able to do more (I hope in the future to have time and strength) to expand my education in multiple fields (poetry, history, philosophy…) because I am not saying anything new, knowing makes you free; I miss this type of motivation that must be backed by politics. Sometimes it is swimming against but we must fight for a better society, more civic, more cultured.
We have not lived in our Center especially difficult situations derived from COVID 19 but it is an outstanding reality in other educational levels where the levels of suicide and depression have risen specifically in our Autonomous Community.
