Cuéntanos Arístides, eres Licenciado en Historia y has sido durante un largo período Profesor de Secundaria en las asignatura de Geografía, Historia y Arte. ¿Cómo llegas al mundo de la Historia y la enseñanza?
Pues al terminar el Bachillerato, me interesaban varias ramas, me gustaba la Historia, Periodismo, Derecho…. Pero siempre Historia tiraba más que las demás y me decanté por ella. Recuerdo la etapa universitaria como un tiempo lleno de buenos recuerdos, por suponer; un descubrimiento a nuevas formas de pensar, conocer gente nueva y diferente y todos como rasgo común la pasión por la especialización en Historia.
¿ Y cómo llegó la idea de convertirte en docente?
Cuando terminé la carrera, estaba abierto a todo, pero la docencia suponía el contacto con los jóvenes y el poderles ayudar a formarse como personas, y eso supuso un aliciente importante.
En los barrios donde impartiste clase, te saludan con cariño y acuden a ti de manera cotidiana, por el buen recuerdo que dejaste en tus alumnos. Dime, ¿por qué crees que después de años, se sienten inclinados a compartir contigo?
Creo que es porque yo siempre abría la puerta a la comunicación y a la comprensión de cada uno de mis alumnos. Es necesaria una cierta distancia basada en el respeto y el normal desarrollo de la convivencia pero es indudable, que no se puede ser docente sin practicar la empatía ante las dificultades, el apoyo constante con palabras de ánimo y aliento a las problemáticas individuales de cada alumno. Pregunta al alumnador: “¿cómo te encuentras? Qué necesitas”? Y no sólo ser un mero transmisor de contenidos.
A la hora de seguir creyendo en nuestra profesión, más allá del tiempo y las dificultades es importante tener vocación como ingrediente básico para seguir adelante y sobre todo recordar, que no todo viene en la teoría de los libros. Hay que pensar en la responsabilidad que se tiene como docente y en creer que podemos ser capaces de hacer que nuestros alumnos cumplan sus sueños el día de mañana.
Hay que levantarse por la mañana siendo consciente de las realidades diferentes de cada uno y de que podemos aprender y enriquecernos, entre todos, padres, alumnos, docentes, etc.
¿Y qué nos cuentas de la diversidad en las aulas?
Saberse comunicar adecuadamente, es un factor clave. Saber llegar a todos lso alumnos, incluso aquellos con el cartel impuesto injustamente de “imposibles”. Saber llegar y establecer un código común de inclusión, es un factor clave para lograr metas a corto y largo plazo con el alumnado. Esa comunicación de calidad, junto a la constancia, nos lleva a lograr metas. Mi meta como profesor, era sobre todo recuperar al alumno totalmente desmotivado. Hay alumnos brillantes, estudiosos que tienen que ser motivados para que sigan adelante, no hay que olvidarse de ellos, porque sean brillantes. Sin embargo, hay alumnos que piensan que no valen para ninguna materia, y a ese hay que dedicarle más tiempo para que se descubra a sí mismo, y se tenga en cuenta que es una persona valiosa como todas las demás, y para ello el apoyo, es vital. La cara de satisfacción del alumnado y de los padres, que en muchos casos no saben qué hacer, no tiene precio, cuando ven el cambio a positivo.
¿Qué caso recuerdas con más cariño?
Recuerdo muchos, a lo largo de los años pero en concreto un alumno diagnosticado con Trastorno de Atención e Hiperactividad incomprendido, poco valorado por los docentes y la familia, no creía en sí mismo… tenía la autoestima muy baja. Sin embargo, yo intenté motivarlo y aconsejarlo para que saliera adelante y logré animarlo a él y a los docentes a llegar a un compromiso común de esfuerzo y confianza. Al final salió adelante y aprobó todas las materias. Por eso, es tan importante la labor de equipo conjunta y bien coordinada.
“El docente debe recordar siempre su vocación como servidor público, recordar que tener buen talante y tener siempre una buena sonrisa y educación consigue muchas cosas en cuanto a relaciones con la comunidad. Es importante recordar que formamos parte de una institución pública y hay que dejarla en buen lugar, porque somos parte de algo más grande que nosotros mismos como individuos.”.
Es también fundamental, involucrar a las familias como parte de ese equipo, ayudarles a entender que tienen que comunicarse con sus hijos para saber realmente qué pasa por sus mentes, y qué necesitan. Además, es importante, tener unos hábitos, unas rutinas de trabajo personal y de ayuda en casa, un horario…. Fomentar la autonomía de sus hijos e hijas, hacerles comprender el valor de la responsabilidad, de encargarse de su material, de sus libros, ser consciente del horario y de cumplir con sus compromisos adquiridos.
¿Qué retos más importantes crees que afronta hoy en día la comunidad educativa?
Retos hay muchos, siempre surgen nuevos obstáculos y dificultades a todos los niveles, pero los docentes deben recordar siempre su vocación como servidor público, recordar que tener buen talante y tener siempre una buena sonrisa y educación consigue muchas cosas en cuanto a relaciones con la comunidad. Es importante recordar que formamos parte de una institución pública y hay que dejarla en buen lugar, porque somos parte de algo más grande que nosotros mismos como individuos.
¿Qué mensaje mandarías a los padres y madres, alumnos y docentes?
Al joven docente de ahora le diría que se supere como profesional, que mantenga la ilusión, y que no pierda la noción de la realidad, con estos tiempos tan locos que vivimos. También les diría que no pierdan nunca el contacto con los alumnos, y estar siempre de su lado, sirviendo a sus necesidades.
A los padres y madres les daría un mensaje de ánimo, para que crean en sus hijos e hijas, que no abandonen nunca la fé en ellos y que no paren de luchar por ellos nunca, porque todo es posible. Nada es imposible.
Y por último, a los alumnos les diría, que luchar por los sueños e ilusiones vale la pena, pero que también hay que esforzarse mucho. Las caídas y malas experiencias nos sirven para fortalecernos, aprender y conocer el mundo y no venirse abajo. Todo lo que deseen puede hacerse realidad con esfuerzo.
Por último, Arístides, ¿con qué cita te identificas?
Pues siempre me ha marcado mucho una frase del historiador Josep Fontana; “Necesitamos repensar la historia para analizar mejor el presente y plantearnos un nuevo futuro”.

Tell us Aristides, you have a degree in History and have been for a long period a Secondary Teacher in the subjects of Geography, History and Art. How do you get to the world of history and teaching?
Well, when I finished high school, I was interested in various branches, I liked History, Journalism, Law…. But Historia always threw more than the others and I opted for it. I remember the university stage as a time full of good memories, to suppose; a discovery of new ways of thinking, meeting new and different people and all as a common trait the passion for specializing in History.
And how did the idea of becoming a teacher come about?
When I finished my degree, I was open to everything, but teaching meant contact with young people and being able to help them to train as people, and that was an important incentive.
In the neighborhoods where you taught, they greet you with affection and come to you on a daily basis, for the good memory you left in your students. Tell me, why do you think that after years, they feel inclined to share with you?
I think it is because I always opened the door to communication and understanding for each of my students. A certain distance based on respect and the normal development of coexistence is necessary but it is undoubted that one cannot be a teacher without practicing empathy in the face of difficulties, constant support with words of encouragement and analyzing the individual problems of each student. Ask the student: “How are you feeling? What do you need”? And not just be a mere transmitter of content.
When it comes to continuing to believe in our profession, beyond time and difficulties, it is important to have a vocation as a basic ingredient to move forward and above all to remember that not everything comes in the theory of books. We must think about the responsibility that we have as a teacher and believe that we can be able to make our students fulfill their dreams tomorrow.
You have to get up in the morning being aware of the different realities of each one and that we can learn and enrich ourselves, together, parents, students, teachers, etc.
And what about the diversity in the classrooms?
Knowing how to communicate properly is a key factor. Knowing how to reach all students, even those with the unjustly imposed “impossible” poster. Knowing how to arrive and establish a common code of inclusion is a key factor in achieving short and long-term goals with students. This quality communication, together with perseverance, leads us to achieve goals. My goal as a teacher was above all to recover the totally unmotivated students. There are brilliant students, hardworking students who have to be motivated to keep going, we must not forget about them, just because they are brilliant. However, there are students who think that they are not valid for any subject, and this kind must dedicate more time to discover themselves, and take into account that they are valuable people like all the others, and for this, the support, it is vital. The face of satisfaction of the students and parents, who in many cases do not know what to do, is priceless, when they see the positive change.
Which case do you remember most fondly?
I remember many, over the years, but in particular a student diagnosed with misunderstood Attention Disorder and Hyperactivity Disorder, little valued by the teachers and the family, did not believe in himself … he had very low self-esteem. However, I tried to motivate and advise him to get ahead and I managed to encourage him and the teachers to reach a common commitment of effort and trust. In the end he got ahead and passed all the subjects. That is why well-coordinated, joint teamwork is so important.
It is also essential to involve families as part of that team, to help them understand that they have to communicate with their children to really know what goes through their minds, and what they need. In addition, it is important that children and teenagers have habits, personal work routines and help at home, a schedule…. Encourage the autonomy of their sons and daughters, make them understand the value of responsibility, take care of their material, their books, be aware of the schedule and fulfill their commitments.
What major challenges do you think the educational community faces today?
There are many challenges, new obstacles and difficulties always arise at all levels, but teachers must always remember their vocation as a public servant, remember that having a good mood and always having a good smile and education achieves many things in terms of relationships with community. It is important to remember that we are part of a public institution and we must leave it in a good place, because we are part of something bigger than ourselves as individuals.
What message would you send to parents, students and teachers?
To the young teacher of today, I would say to improve as a professional, to maintain the enthusiasm, and not to lose the notion of reality, with these crazy times that we live. He would also tell them to never lose contact with the students, and to always be on their side, serving their needs.
I would give fathers and mothers a message of encouragement, so that they believe in their sons and daughters, that they never abandon faith in them and that they never stop fighting for them, because anything is possible. Nothing is impossible.
And finally, I would tell the students that fighting for dreams and hopes is worth it, but they also have to work hard. Falls and bad experiences help us to strengthen ourselves, learn and know the world and not to collapse. Anything you want can come true with effort.
Finally, Aristides, with what date do you identify yourself?
Well, a phrase from the historian Josep Fontana has always left a mark on me; “We need to rethink history to better analyze the present and consider a new future.”
